This artwork is rendered in an expressionistic style, capturing one of my everyday weary expressions - a result of today’s fast-paced society and busy life. Despite being worn out, I find comfort in the joy of eating local hawker food. The grey background slowly fades away, revealing the warm splotches of red and orange, as life begins to return to my dull face.
Food is an important part of culture. It operates as an expression of cultural identity. Immigrants bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go and cooking traditional food is a way of preserving their culture when they move to new places. As such, the dappled colours seem to be muddied together, a reflection of Singapore’s diverse food culture, aged harmoniously together.
