My artwork captures a happy moment of myself enjoying an ice cream on the rainbow bread as I reminisce about my childhood memories. Just like our heritage, the humble Marigold ice cream on rainbow bread is part of our common experience as Singaporeans.
Like many things in life, the presence of the ice cream uncle with his familiar colourful umbrella is often taken for granted. The melting ice cream in my hands illustrates how this common Singaporean pastime is slowly "melting" and fading away before our eyes. Many of us can associate the ice cream uncle with our childhood memories and it is so uniquely Singaporean. Just like the melting ice cream depicted in my drawing, this trade is dying out. As our society progresses and with increasing competition from cafes and other ice cream retailers, these familiar sights are getting rarer hence I hope that through my artwork, viewers will see this simple dessert in a different light.
